As children return to classes or begin studying remotely, we urge parents to learn about the risks children face in online spaces and how to empower your children to be aware of the risks and navigate the web safely. Please make use of our resources and spread this much needed information to other families so we can continue to protect those most vulnerability in our communties. Thank you for the support we’ve received thus far and as a reminder, all feedback is welcome!
Our “Why”:
The United Nations defines human trafficking as any form of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harboring, or receiving a person by means of threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, abduction, fraud, or deception, for an improper purpose including forced labor or sexual exploitation.
600,000 and 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders annually and, of these, 80% are women or girls and 50% are minors. Trafficking exploits individuals in some of the most heinous ways imaginable, raking in an estimated $150 billion for traffickers. This effects men, women, and children, both globally and domestically.

FOR YOUR EYES:
A Direct Legacy of Slavery, Domestic Worker Exploitation Is On the Rise In the U.S : Labor trafficking is increasing in the wake of the pandemic as domestic workers suffer from a lack of legal protections, violence at the hands of employers, and few government relief opportunities in the midst of an economic recession. Read about how anti trafficking programs are fighting to help domestic workers navigate the crisis.
“The vast majority of domestic workers are immigrants, which makes them particularly vulnerable to exploitation and labor trafficking –when employees are forced to remain on the job through threats, violence or other forms of coercion, or brought to a country through fraudulent means.”
FBI Warns Parents About Potential Spike in Cyber Crimes as Kids Begin E-Learning: As students around the nation begin remote online classes, the FBI has issued a warning to parents about the escalated risks of online sexual predation and grooming. Read this article for more information about how to spot predatory online behavior and resources available to protect children from abuse.
“Criminals often pose as someone younger to earn a child's trust. Then the grooming process starts. They could eventually ask a child to send inappropriate pictures and videos. And later, they often use those images to extort kids, threatening that they'll expose the child to their family if they don't provide more graphic images.”

DW Sex Trafficking In Nigeria(Documentary): This DW documentary explores the dark reality many young girls and women face when they are lured from their homes by traffickers and prostituted throughout Europe. Oftentimes this begins a perpetual cycle of abuse as victims are strategically kept in debt by traffickers and are unable to escape prostitution. While the documentary touches on some distressing themes, it is important that viewers realize the severity and prevalence of human trafficking throughout the globe in order to confront and dismantle these systems of slavery everywhere.
“I never knew I would go to Napales for prostitution. I was 15 the first time, I was so devastated. I was so hurt the first time. I don’t have any choice but to obey their commands. ”

“This particular issue of human trafficking doesn’t care, what color your skin is. It doesn’t care how much money your parents make doesn’t care about anything. Are you a body? And that’s all it cares about. And I feel like, honestly, that we should have protest in the streets about this. I don’t understand how this is allowed to go on in this day and age.
